The Five Solas of the Reformation
The Solas are sometimes called the Foundation of the Reformation and have been espoused, at least in theory, by Protestants since that time, but why are they so important? Why should we, in this postmodern world bent on spirituality without foundations, give an ear to centuries old slogans? Why should we care that Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, and Sola Deo Gloria gave rise to one of, if not the most, important movements in Christianity since the Apostolic period.
We should care as these are not merely dusty sayings from a bygone era but are the formulations of faithful ministers of God’s Word that have given an enduring impetus to our Protestant Faith. We stand upon the backs of giants and should never forget from whence we came, for those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
